Chicken Soup with Rice Spring 2001 Author: Randi Longmeyer
Objectives:
Read the poem each month, modify the poem to be
able to sing as a song, cooperate with other students to sing, cooperate with
group members to complete other objectives Provision for special needs: give students a beat/melody to use Materials: many
copies of “Chicken Soup With
Rice” by Maurice Sendak, tape player or video camera to record the finished
product Procedures:
Teacher: I will read the poem to students and then group
them by 3’s, 4’s or 5’s to work together. I will give them adequate time
to prepare and circle the room to assist where needed. Each group will be given
a common item to use to keep the beat or use as background music. Student: Students will work with the assigned group to turn
the poem into a song that they can perform for their classmates. They will use
common items to keep the beat or to use as background. They will then perform
for the class while being video taped or recorded. Closure: Each
group will perform for the other students and we will discuss how each group had
different ideas and I will stress that ALL of the ideas are good and creative. Assessment: cooperation
of group members and non-group members, arrangement of beats and background
sounds, amount of time and quality of time spent practicing, composition of all
