Provision for special needs: give students a beat/melody to use

Materials: many copies of  “Chicken Soup With Rice” by Maurice Sendak, tape player or video camera to record the finished product

Procedures:

Teacher: I will read the poem to students and then group them by 3’s, 4’s or 5’s to work together. I will give them adequate time to prepare and circle the room to assist where needed. Each group will be given a common item to use to keep the beat or use as background music.

Student: Students will work with the assigned group to turn the poem into a song that they can perform for their classmates. They will use common items to keep the beat or to use as background. They will then perform for the class while being video taped or recorded.

Closure: Each group will perform for the other students and we will discuss how each group had different ideas and I will stress that ALL of the ideas are good and creative.

Assessment: cooperation of group members and non-group members, arrangement of beats and background sounds, amount of time and quality of time spent practicing, composition of all sounds and students working together
